About Breast Implant Revision
Breast augmentation surgery is very popular with women in the United States and around the world. Millions of women each year have implants surgically placed within their breasts and love their results. However, sometimes a breast implant revision surgery is needed after the initial surgery to correct medical or cosmetic issues with the implant. We will perform your breast revision surgery even if we did not perform the original surgery. Your health and happiness are important to us. You may want to consult with one of our plastic surgeons if you are experiencing:
- Deformities, rippling, dimpling, or ruptures in one or both implants
- Implants have shifted from their original position since being surgically placed
- Dissatisfaction with the size of your breasts (too large or not enhanced enough)
- Excessive scar tissue that feels hard under your skin or if you can feel the edges of the implant
Keep in mind that your breast implants will need to be exchanged or removed in 10 – 15 years after your first augmentation surgery. Revision surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure with surgical techniques much like the first surgery. We also offer our revision services to women who just no longer wish to have their implants. We want to hear your concerns about your breast appearance in a private consultation at Inspire Aesthetics in Delray Beach and Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Breast Revision Reviews
"My breasts look amazing and I got my confidence back - There are no words to describe my gratitude to Dr. Crane and the Inspire staff. I underwent a breast revision surgery the week of Thanksgiving. I met with four surgeons surgeons prior to meeting with Dr. Crane. I knew immediately I wanted to undergo my procedure under Dr. Crane’s care. He’s a talented surgeon with exceptional training. On top of his expertise, he’s incredibly kind, empathetic, and patient. Dr. Crane took the time to listen to my concerns and answer all of my questions. He possesses a positive energy and an eye for aesthetics. Operations day was perfect. The nurses -incredible!! They said the nicest things to me when I was coming out of anesthesia and took good care of me as I was prepped for the operating room. After surgery, Dr. Crane came to check on me and he called to check in the next day. I’m two months post op and thrilled with my results! My breast look amazing and I got my confidence back!"- F. / RealSelf / Jan 19, 2023
Usually, a breast revision surgery is performed for:
- Medical conditions
- Cosmetic reasons
- Implant exchange or change in size
- Position of the implant has changed
We will provide you with a thorough consultation in our office, review your medical history, perform an examination, and possibly order an MRI imaging of the breast to determine if an implant has ruptured.
What to Expect
During your consultation, your surgeon will listen to your concerns and cosmetic goals before making recommendations for a specific treatment plan. Since each implant revision surgery is unique, the surgical technique and length of surgery and recovery will vary. You should expect a longer recovery time for multiple or extensive revision surgeries that involve removing scar tissue or removing loose skin. A revision that replaces a breast implant usually allows for the shortest recovery period. If you suspect your breast implant has ruptured, please seek medical attention immediately.
- Implant ruptures
Ruptures are rare and require revision surgery. A ruptured saline implant may appear to be deflated and flattened, but the saline is safely absorbed by the body. When a silicone implant ruptures, the gel doesn't move. There is an obvious difference in firmness and the shape of the breast. In most cases, the silicone is still contained within the implant and does not harm the body.
- Double Bubble
This deformity creates an unnatural indentation in the breast and looks like the implant has fallen out of position. Visually, the breasts will appear unattractively doubled underneath the crease. This usually occurs if the implants were not properly positioned during the augmentation surgery. It can also happen if there is too much scar tissue around the implant itself. Breast revision surgery is the only way to amend this situation as the situation will not correct itself. The surgeon may also use a surgical mesh to reinforce the implant and keep it from moving.
- Capsular Contracture
Scarring can cause a hardening of the breast, which occurs more often in saline implants. There is always a risk of scar tissue forming around the breast implant once it has settled into the chest, which shifts the implant out of place and hardens the breast. In this case, a surgeon would have to remove the scar tissue with a procedure called a capsulectomy.
- Breast Rippling
Breast rippling is a visible wrinkling beneath or on the side of the breast. This can often be seen under clothes. Rippling can happen with any augmentation patient and is most common with women who are thin and have very little muscle under the breast. Saline implants cause rippling more than silicone implants. While this complication is not a health risk, it does lead to unattractive, wrinkly breasts.
