The Importance of Breast Shape & Size

The size and shape of a woman’s breasts can significantly impact her self-esteem, body image, and overall confidence. For many individuals, having breasts that align with their desired aesthetic can lead to increased self-assurance and a positive self-image. Breast augmentation plays a crucial role in helping women achieve their desired breast shape and size, addressing concerns related to asymmetry, volume loss, or naturally smaller breasts.

Furthermore, breast size can also affect clothing choices and how a person feels in different outfits. Achieving a balanced, harmonious silhouette through breast augmentation can enhance your ability to wear a wider range of clothing styles and feel more comfortable and confident in your appearance. Ultimately, achieving the ideal breast shape and size can positively influence your overall well-being and help you achieve your desired aesthetic goals.

About Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size, shape, and overall appearance of a woman’s breasts. This cosmetic surgery typically involves the use of silicone or saline breast implants, though it can also utilize fat transfer from other areas of the body. Breast augmentation in Delray Beach and Fort Lauderdale is a popular option for those seeking to address issues like small breasts, post-pregnancy volume loss, or breast asymmetry.

Breast augmentation with implants involves placing saline or silicone breast implants beneath the breast tissue or beneath the muscle and breast tissue. Meanwhile, autologous breast augmentation involves harvesting excess fat cells from another part of the body, such as the abdomen, and injecting it into the breasts.

  • Small breast size

  • Volume loss due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations
  • Lack of proportion between the two breasts

Best Candidates

Women who are in good medical condition can be considered for breast augmentation surgery. Suitable candidates for breast augmentation are women who exhibit disproportionate breast size for their body shape, uneven breasts or asymmetry, a loss of firmness or breast tissue due to genetics, childbirth, and/or weight loss, and those who simply want a larger breast size. The majority of women who have this surgery are not satisfied with the current shape and size of their breasts.

However, please note that women who have sagging or drooping breasts may not be good candidates for this surgery. If you’re concerned about sagging breasts, a breast lift or breast lift with augmentation may be more suitable. A breast augmentation focuses on increasing the breast size, and a breast lift focuses on repositioning the nipple and breast tissue to a higher location on the chest and tightening the skin envelope. During your initial consultation for breast augmentation in Fort Lauderdale or Delray Beach, our surgeons will discuss the requirements for surgery and determine what is necessary and/or realistic for your preferred goals.

Types of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Based on your personal goals and the aesthetic outcome you desire, our plastic surgeons will discuss the best treatment options for you. Breast augmentation can be performed using saline or silicone implants or fat transfer. Implants offer more dramatic and immediate results, but fat transfer is suitable for those seeking autologous augmentation using tissues drawn from their body. Our surgeons will discuss your goals and recommend the most appropriate options.

Breast Implant Surgery

Silicone and saline implants remain the primary choice in breast augmentation surgery. Saline implants are filled with saltwater at the time of surgery, and they give the surgeon more control to make adjustments. Saline implants often feel firmer and are recommended for patients with enough natural breast tissue to avoid visible rippling. They require no special monitoring. Silicone implants feel and look a bit more natural and are a better choice for women with very little breast tissue. Silicone implants come pre-filled, so they can’t be adjusted, but we use sizers beforehand to ensure the perfect size. Silicone is the more popular choice because it is softer and more natural feeling, but does require monitoring starting year 5-6 after surgery.

Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

During your consultation for breast augmentation in Delray Beach or Fort Lauderdale, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your goals, concerns, and expectations with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will assess your current breast size and shape, take photographs, recommend suitable implant options, and explain the surgical process, including potential risks and recovery. This ensures your breast augmentation aligns perfectly with your aesthetic desires and helps you make an informed decision. The team at Inspire Aesthetics is dedicated to helping you make the right surgery decisions.

Following a thorough consultation, you will be given a customized treatment plan. Our surgeons will determine the type of implant that will garner the optimal results you seek and recommend the appropriate size and shape.

Please note that we exclusively use Allergan implants. Your surgeon will consider how much native breast tissue exists, and an assessment will be made regarding breast base width, bone structure, and a comparison of body shape to the breast size.

Our objective is to produce the most desirable-looking outcome for you in a safe and effective manner. After selecting the implant, our surgeons will also discuss the appropriate incision type and placement. Breast implants are typically inserted beneath the pectoral muscle. Our first two choices for the incision areas are the inframammary fold (the incision is made along the crease of the breast) or the periareolar incision (the incision is made around the areola). We offer the most advanced techniques to best hide scarring and provide the most gorgeous, natural outcome.

Your Breast Augmentation Recovery Process

Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes under two hours to complete. After the procedure, our nurses wrap you in a sterile surgical dressing and create some compression with a medical sports bra. In the days that follow surgery, you will be sore and swollen, but the aesthetic result will be seen immediately.

We recommend that our clients take it easy for several days, but most can return to work within 3 to 5 days. We advise against exercise for approximately 4 to 6 weeks to allow the breasts enough time to heal appropriately. It takes 4 to 6 months for the breasts to “drop” into their final position, for all swelling and bruising to go away, and for full breast sensation to return.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure that allows you to achieve the breast shape and size you desire. However, patients considering breast augmentation often have numerous questions about the breast implant size, style, materials, longevity, and more. We answer some of the most common questions about breast augmentation in Fort Lauderdale and Delray Beach, FL.

What is the right breast implant size for me?

Implant size is typically measured in cubic centimeters (cc). Breast implants are available in various sizes, ranging from small (around 200cc) to larger options (up to 770cc for silicone and even larger with saline implants). Your surgeon will carefully evaluate your concerns, discuss your goals, and guide you toward suitable sizes that align with your body frame.

It’s important to note that the concept of “cup size” can be misleading and inconsistent. Bra manufacturers have varying definitions of cup sizes, leading to confusion. Instead, focus on your desired aesthetic outcome:

  • Size Preference: Do you want a substantial increase in breast size or a more subtle change. Do you want a prominent, “implanted” look or a natural appearance?
  • Breast Shape: Do you want a natural slope or a fuller, rounder upper pole? Are you interested in enhancing cleavage and lateral fullness (“side boob”)?

Your initial breast size, shape, and position are crucial factors in your decision. Implants primarily enhance your existing features. For instance, if you begin with a smaller chest (e.g., a small “A” cup), the majority of your new breast size will be attributed to the implants. Conversely, if you already have moderate breast volume (e.g., a moderate “C” cup), your natural volume may be around the 300cc range, and adding 300cc implants will give you 600cc breasts.

One effective method to determine your desired size is by reviewing before and after photos. Browse through our website or consult with your surgeon to find images of patients with similar starting breast size and shape as yours. Analyze these images from various angles and perspectives to identify the implant size that appeals to you the most. Our plastic surgeons will guide you toward the most suitable breast implants for your goals.

Can I "try on" different breast implant sizes to help with my decision?

After reviewing before and after photographs, you can “try on” different breast implant sizes to make an informed decision. You can use two methods to try different breast implant sizes — an in-office sizer trial and an at-home Inspire FlaxTest.

In-Office Sizer Trial

Inspire Aesthetics offers the in-office sizer trial to help you visualize your potential results. During the trial, you can try on various implant sizers beneath an Inspire Aesthetics sports bra. Alternatively, you can bring your own sports bra to use with our sizers. This allows you to gauge how each size influences your appearance, helping you make a more informed decision. Trying on sizers in person provides a tangible sense of the size, shape, and projection you desire.

At-Home FlaxTest

If you prefer a more private and unhurried approach, you can opt for the Inspire Aesthetics Breast Test or FlaxTest in the comfort of your own home. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Gather Your Materials: Start by acquiring a sports bra that you feel comfortable in and some rice or flax seeds. You’ll also need a measuring cup and a few small bags.
  • Choose an Initial Size: Begin with an initial implant size that you believe matches your desired outcome based on your research and preferences.
  • Create Your Sizers: Fill small bags with rice or flax seeds in increments of approximately 50cc. This amount corresponds to a noticeable difference in implant size.
  • Try On Different Sizes: Place the bags of rice or flax seeds inside your sports bra to mimic the effect of different implant sizes. Vary the sizes by adding or removing bags.
  • Assess Your Preferences: Wear the sports bra with the sizers for an extended period, allowing you to evaluate not only the appearance but also the comfort and fit of each size.
  • Finalize Your Decision: Based on your experience and preferences, select the implant size that best suits your goals. Keep in mind that subtle differences in implant size, such as 25cc, may not be very noticeable, so focus on what feels right for you.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery?

Yes, it is possible to breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery. Many individuals with breast implants have successfully breastfed their babies without complications. There is no evidence suggesting that breastfeeding with silicone or saline implants has negative effects on the baby’s health. However, the ability to breastfeed can vary from person to person and from one pregnancy to another. Just as some women may successfully breastfeed one child and encounter challenges with another, the same holds true for those with breast implants.

If breastfeeding is a concern, it’s advisable to discuss it with your plastic surgeon during your consultation. They can provide guidance and share information about the surgical approach that may minimize potential interference with breastfeeding.

What is the difference between saline implants and silicone gel implants?

Understanding the distinctions between saline and silicone implants is crucial when considering breast augmentation in Delray Beach or Fort Lauderdale. Here, we break down the differences between the two implant types.
Composition and Structure

  • Saline Implants: Saline implants are encased in a silicone rubber shell and come sterile and deflated. During the surgery, the surgeon fills the implant with saline to achieve the desired size, measured in cc’s. This process creates the implant’s volume and shape.
  • Silicone Gel Implants: Silicone gel implants (gummy bear implants) contain cohesive silicone gel sealed within a silicone rubber shell. These implants come pre-filled. The gel is cohesive, meaning it is a single mass, not a liquid. In the event of a rupture, the gel does not leak out like a liquid, and the implant maintains its shape.

Look and Feel

  • Saline Implants: Saline implants tend to create a more “implanted” appearance and feel. They may exhibit more rippling of the skin with movement compared to silicone gel implants.
  • Silicone Gel Implants: Silicone gel implants provide a natural look and feel. They typically result in less noticeable rippling of the skin when in motion.

Implant Rupture

  • Saline Implants: In the event of a saline implant rupture, the implant deflates, causing a loss of volume and shape. The body naturally absorbs the saline, and it is recommended to remove or replace the implant if a rupture occurs. Regular breast cancer screening is recommended for individuals with all implants, including saline implants.
  • Silicone Gel Implants: If a silicone gel implant ruptures, the cohesive gel remains mostly intact, and the implant does not deflate. Ruptures in silicone gel implants are often asymptomatic and may go unnoticed. Consequently, patients with silicone implants must undergo a breast ultrasound and/or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) at year five to six and every three years after that to detect possible leaks.
What is the right implant style for me?

Selecting the right implant style is a crucial decision when considering breast augmentation. Here’s an overview of different implant styles to help you make an informed choice.

  • Smooth Round Implants: They are the most commonly used implants at Inspire Aesthetics. They feature a crystal-clear, smooth surface that is transparent, allowing you to see directly through the gel or saline filling. Smooth round implants offer a natural look and feel.
  • IDEAL Implant: This is a saline implant with internal baffles resembling the structure of a waterbed. While it is costlier than traditional saline and most silicone gel implants, the IDEAL implant is crafted to provide a saline option that closely mimics the feel of a silicone implant.
  • Textured Implants: Textured implants feature a rougher surface that encourages the adherence of body tissues. This prevents these implants from moving within the breast cavity. At Inspire Aesthetics, we typically avoid textured implants because they can increase the risk of BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma).
  • Shaped or Anatomical Implants: These are typically teardrop-shaped implants that deliver a natural breast shape, characterized by increased fullness in the lower portion (inferior pole) and less fullness in the upper portion (superior pole). In the past, some anatomical implants were textured, but their popularity has waned due to concerns about BIA-ALCL.

At Inspire Aesthetics, we generally use smooth round implants because they’re extremely safe and offer a natural look and feel. Furthermore, even if the saline implant moves, it doesn’t distort the appearance of the breast. However, our plastic surgeons will discuss your goals and recommend the most appropriate breast implant style for you.

How long do breast implants last?

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. Contrary to the misconception that they need replacement every ten years, there’s no fixed timeline for replacement as long as there are no issues. Eventually, the breast implant may have to be removed and replaced if there are issues. It’s more common for patients to voluntarily replace breast implants to modify their breast appearance or correct drooping caused by gravity, breastfeeding, age, or other factors.
