About Chin Augmentation

Augmentation of your chin can have an impressive impact on your facial appearance and profile. A chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty or genioplasty, is an invasive cosmetic surgery that focuses on cosmetic issues of the chin and jawline, such as a weak chin. At Inspire Aesthetics, our patients considering chin augmentation will have a private consultation with one of our plastic surgeons to discover the right course of action on how to augment the chin, such as implementing a synthetic chin implant or decreasing the impact of hanging skin at the jowls. We have several different techniques available and can combine this procedure with other cosmetic surgeries. Our talented plastic surgeons in Fort Lauderdale and Delray Beach, FL can provide you with an excellent result in redefining the contours and balancing your facial features.

Best Candidates

Good candidates for chin augmentation surgery are men and women who may experience:

  • A recessed chin
  • A lack of definition in the jawline
  • A weak profile due to poor chin structure
  • Loose skin at the lower half of the face near the mouth
  • Facial imbalance

What to Expect

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate your chin to see how it fits in relation to the face and neck, as well as the position of the teeth. In some patients, a severe overbite (lower teeth behind the upper teeth) may be present and the chin's position may be a reflection of an overall shorter lower jaw. In these patients, other treatment options may be considered, including jaw surgery. In some cases, an X-ray of a patient's profile may be useful to look at both the facial profile and the bone structure for treatment planning. For patients who need a chin implant only, the implant is positioned over the bone, below the lips in a pocket that is created to hold the prosthesis in place. Scarring is usually not evident since the incisions are placed under the chin or within the lower lip. Liposuction of the chin and/or neck may be incorporated to help achieve a more defined jawline.

Other Considerations

Following chin augmentation surgery, patients will have variations in the healing process based on their individual surgery. For those receiving an implant, there will be much less downtime. For those undergoing genioplasty, the recovery will be longer as the jaw, bone, and teeth have been manipulated which will need additional recovery time. All patients, no matter their procedure route, should expect some bruising and swelling following their procedure. Patients may be given a chinstrap to help control the swelling and to help tissue adapt to the implant or new bone placement. Swelling usually subsides after 7 – 10 days, but this varies among patients.
